Time se antičko doba približilo kraju, a novi
narodi postali su dio povijesti Sredozemlja.
Otok Pag, opustošen Seobom naroda, naselili
su Hrvati, stoljećima hrabro odolijevajući svim
povijesnim nevoljama koje su zahvaćale hrvat-
sku obalu i otoke. No tragovi ranijih vremena
nisu se zauvijek izgubili, već su u krajoliku,
kontinuiranom djelovanju i ljudskoj svijesti
preživjeli do naših dana.
Kao što je već u prethodnom tekstu naznače-
no, arheološka baština iz raznih vremenskih
razdoblja, a naročito ona iz antičkog vreme-
na snažno je zastupljena, ali nedovoljno isko-
rištena kao poticaj za otkrivanje kako bogate
prošlosti tako i svih kulturnih i prirodnih zna-
menitosti na području Grada Novalje. Ideja o
njenoj sveobuhvatnoj prezentaciji kao poticaju
za prezentaciju cjelokupne prošlosti, tradicij-
ske kulture i gospodarstva počiva na činjenici
da se tradicionalni način života iznimno dugo
zadržao na tom prostoru te su njegovi odjeci
još i danas intenzivno prisutni. U suživotu s
prirodom prapovijesno je, antičko i srednjo-
vjekovno gospodarstvo prilično nalikovalo
onome koje nazivamo tradicionalnim. Isto vri-
jedi i za duhovnu baštinu u vidu legendi, pri-
ča, poezije i pjevanja koja, naoko jednostavna,
izražava istančan osjećaj za prirodu, prošlost i
kulturu.
Gotovo uz svako arheološko nalazište ili zonu
može se vezati određena legenda, pripovijest ili
pjesma; može ga se povezati s nekom od grana
tradicionalnog gospodarstva koja ga čini i da-
nas živim, a ujedno od njega dobiva potvrdu
svoje stoljetne ili čak tisućljetne prisutnosti;
njegovo se postojanje ili nepostojanje na odre-
đenom prostoru može protumačiti prirodnim
osobinama krajolika, a ponad svega na njega se
u prostoru i vremenu nadovezuju ostala nala-
zišta sa svojim zanimljivim pričama.
Brojna arheološka istraživanja i zaštitni zahvati
na kulturnim dobrima koji se na poticaj i uz
podršku lokalne samouprave tijekom poslje-
dnjih godina provode na području Grada No-
valje stvorili odgovarajuću atmosferu za pokre-
tanje projekta kojim bi se postojeća kulturna
i prirodna, materijalna i duhovna baština na
odgovarajući način zaštitila i prezentirala.
Thus the Classical Antiquity reached its end, while
new peoples became a part of the Mediterranean
history. The island of Pag, devastated in the time
of great barbarian migrations, was colonized by
the Croats, who for centuries bravely resisted every
historical misfortune that befell the Croatian coast
and islands. But the traces of earlier times were not
forever lost, but survived in landscape, continuous
activity and in human conscience, all the way to
our times.
As has already been said, archaeological heritage
dating to various periods, and especially that from
the Classical Antiquity, is represented in great
numbers, but it is not used quite enough as an
impulse in discovering both the rich history and
every culture and natural attraction on the territo-
ry of the city of Novalja. Idea for its complete pres-
entation as a stimulus for the presentation of the
complete history, traditional culture and economy,
is founded on the fact that the traditional way of
life was maintained for an extremely long time
in that region, and its reflections are very strong
even today. Coexisting with nature, the prehistor-
ic, Graeco-Roman, and mediaeval economy was
very much alike to the one we call traditional. The
same applies to spiritual heritage, that is, legends,
stories, poetry and singing, which, although seem-
ingly simple, expresses a subtle sense for nature,
history and culture.
A certain legend, story or poem is attached to al-
most every archaeological site or zone; it could
further be associated with some of the lines of tra-
ditional economy, which make it very much alive
even today, while it receives from it the confirma-
tion of its centennial or millennial presence; its
presence or absence in a certain area could be ex-
plained with the natural features in the landscape,
and, above all, other sites with their interesting
stories merge with it in space and time.
Numerous archaeological excavations and protec-
tive undertakings on cultural heritage objects that
had been done on the territory of the City of No-
valja during the last few years, initiated and sup-
ported by the local self-government, have created
the right atmosphere for propelling projects that
would adequately protect and represent the exist-
ing cultural and natural, and material and spiritual
heritage.
